# Letter from Aldon

summary::

Your letter from your background is from Aldon Corewinds, a dragonborn elder of Archon Rest. He was a kindly figure and mentor to you in your youth, and an influential figure in the community (if a bit of a joker from time to time), who passed away when you were aged 15:

Dear Pierce,

I would hope that this letter comes as a surprise to you, for it brings me great pleasure to have one last trick up my sleeve. I sincerely hope that you are doing well, and that the town has not become entirely boring in my absence.

I have arranged for this letter to be passed to you on the eve of your departure for your Seeking. As I write this, you are currently 15 years old, and though rarely a day goes by where I do not see you, you are not yet ready to learn what I have to say. How time flies. It seems that only a few short weeks ago you arrived as that young child, only as tall as my knee.

To stop my emotional reminiscing, I have a purpose in sending you this letter. From a young age you showed an inquisitive mind, Pierce, one which I always attempted to kindle. I gave you extra lessons intended for years later in your studies. I arranged for you to be given extra books and scrolls. But most importantly I always tried to instil in you the kind of questioning attitude that befits scholars of the arcane. It is something that has been somewhat forgotten in our community - our relationship with our Patrons (Lexhollord) has clouded our objectivity, for we rely on them and they rely on us.

As you are aware, my Patron and your Patron are the same. The Unseen Whisperer willed ideas into my head long before you were born, and I imagine will continue to do so until the day I pass away. All of these ideas have done great good - without the arcane knowledge gifted I would not have been able to safeguard Archons Rest nearly as well as I did during my time. But Pierce, please keep this in mind - there is no such thing as a free lunch. The Unseen Whisperer has never directly made a request of any of us, and the question is simply… why? Why does this being continue to help us? It is a question that I have had no answer to despite my many communions with the Whisperer. What stake would such a being have in our wellfare? To be blunt, it is like a tiger becoming interested in the affairs of a colony of ants.

I can only conclude that the motivations of our Patron are unfathomable to me.

I wish you the very best, may your life provide you with the answers to all your questions. Never forget how proud I am of you.

Aldon .
